Starting counselling can be really daunting. I am always conscious of how much guts it takes to book an appointment and come to the first session. At this point, my clients don’t know me and what they are bringing to counselling is personal and may be painful. Not knowing what to expect from a first session, might make it even more unsettling. So perhaps it is helpful to say what usually happens in this first appointment.

The first session is to meet me and get a feel for my style of counselling, to make sure it is what you are looking for. We will have a chat about what has brought you to counselling and what you want to get from your sessions. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. As well as this we will look at my contract and check that you are happy with it.

At the end of the session, you can book another appointment or go away and have a think about it – either is absolutely fine. What is important is that you find the therapy and the counsellor that is right for you.
